Scripture Read Job 31-32

Nugget Job 31:1-2
“I have made a covenant with my eyes; how then could I look upon a virgin? What would be my portion from God above, and my heritage from the Almighty on high?”

Devotional Thought: Job, “That man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil” (vs 1:1b) continues to declare his innocence. Essentially, he asks, if I sin what then would I receive from God, what then would be my heritage from God? Job is declaring his choice for the heritage God desires for us, while continuing to wrestle with why he finds himself in the condition he is in. The example of Job’s life reminds us that during our human lifetime we may be called to suffer through hard times, endure circumstances that seem like punishment. God was confident in Job’s response as God was confident in Jesus future response, to live a sin free life though tempted. Job was human, Job was born a sinner yet God consider him blameless and upright. Job chose to live his life respecting God, being obedient to God and rejecting evil. O that I/you/we do the same, even during times of trial.

Scripture Read Psalms 45-47

Nugget Psalm 47:1-4

“Clap your hands, all you peoples; shout to God with loud songs of joy. For the LORD, the Most High is awesome, a great king over all the earth. He subdued peoples under us, and nations under our feet. He chose our heritage for us, the pride of Jacob whom he loves.”

Devotional Thought: “He chose our heritage for us, the pride of Jacob whom he loves.” God establishes the way He desires we go; His choice is for His people to be in relationship with Him. His choice is that we choose to move in that heritage. That heritage is the perfection of the original creation; His desire is that we choose to live in that Kingdom, the Kingdom of God with Him, as He created it to be. God is a gentlemen, He will not force us to choose what He desires. Those who do – rejoice, they clap their hands and sing loud joyous songs to our awesome God. Those who don’t – God continues to pursue, never giving up. Give in to God’s pursuit, choose to move with God, in the heritage God established.

Scripture Read 1 Samuel 26-31

Nugget 1 Samuel 26:16

“This thing that you have done is not good. As the LORD lives, you deserve to die, because you have not kept watch over your lord, the LORD’s anointed. See now, where is the king’s spear, or the water jar that was at his head?”

Devotional Thought: David speaks to Abner, Saul’s bodyguard, who has (along with the rest of Saul’s army) allowed David and Abishai to not only enter their perimeter but to get close enough to King Saul to take his spear and water jug. Soldiers today, while in the field, especially in combat situations, sleep with their weapon right next to their bodies. David and Abishai were close enough to kill Saul while his guard slept. David didn’t allow Abishai to kill Saul. His rational was basically, Saul is still the king, and it is not time for him to die; God will determine the time. That’s pretty big of David considering Saul has been and is now hunting David to kill him. I wonder how many of us have left a spiritual leader, one sent to lead us, out to dry. Left him or her unprotected, because of disagreements between us? It is right to defend oneself against someone attempting to kill you however, it isn’t right to kill (to fight against, collude, slander and gossip about) one who is called by God to lead into the future. Why not instead work with, come along side, help build up – edify not fight.

Scripture Read Exodus 9-12

Nugget Exodus 11:10

“Moses and Aaron performed all these wonders before Pharaoh; but the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the people of Israel go out of his land.”

Devotional Thought: Pharaoh hardened his own heart so many times that God finally allowed him to have his way and have a hardened heart. Imagine being so selfish and stubborn that one would resist the love of God. Are you willing to move with God, to be obedient to God’s desires, even if it means a great change for you? Or are you stubborn in everything you do, “Having it your own way – demanding everything be your way or no way? Do you box out and close off those who are there to assist you accomplish something? Turn to God, allow His Prevenient Grace to soften your heart, to love God and others. Join with God in seeing that God’s desires come to be.

Scripture Read 1 Corinthians 13-14

Nugget 1 Corinthians 13:1-8a, 14:1,3b, 4b, 12

“If I speak in the tongues of mortals and angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. … Pursue love and strive for the spiritual gifts, and especially that you may prophesy. … those who prophesy speak to other people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. … those who prophecy build up the church. ….So with yourselves; since you are eager for spiritual gifts, strive to excel in them for building up the church.”

Devotional Thought: I confess there are times when I am impatient, I am in a hurry. I am in a hurry to get to where God leads and I am in a hurry for those God has trusted me to lead, to follow, to trust where God is leading us. I confess that persons who obstruct others from carrying out mission and ministry cause me to be act unkindly. I confess that those persons who block my ability to lead the rest of the congregation, who refuse to allow me to join with them, much less join with me, make me irritable. The thing is that God in every appointment I have served so far, God sent me there to build up. Those who are obstacles to building up, those who are obstacles to building fellowship, those who are obstacles to journeying into the future are not just obstacles to me but to the move of God. I am dreadfully sorry for losing my patience and for a moment not displaying love, I was wrong. But I will not stop trying to build up the people, congregations and churches that God sends me to. I will trust God to either change hearts, or cause those people to get out of the way.

Scripture Nugget 4.15.2017

Scripture Read Mark 9 - 10

Nugget Mark 10:32-38a, 43b-45

“They were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them; they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. He took the twelve aside again and began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, ‘See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death; then they will hand him over to the Gentiles; they will mock him, and spit upon him, and flog him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise again.’ James and John, the sons of Zebedee came forward to him and said to him, ‘Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.’ And he said to them, ‘What is it you want me to do for you?’ And they said to him, ‘Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.’ But Jesus said to them, ‘You do not know what you are asking’ . . . ‘whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.’”

Devotional Thought: Those who worshiped on Good Friday just heard this story played out. Here Jesus, on his way into Jerusalem, again tells his Disciples what is about to happen, it is an ugly story even in its brevity. The rest of the story is even uglier than its introduction – we heard the fullness of it as we lived the story with Jesus and his followers from the Last Supper, to the Garden, in his arrest, his suffering in many ways, the trial, physical abuse, emotional and mental abuse and ultimately the crucifixion. James and John, come forward and ask to be a part of the glory. Little do they know that as they ask to be on Jesus’ right and left; they are asking to replace the two thieves who will be crucified with Jesus. How many of us are willing to serve others, even to the point of being crucified with Jesus? There can be no Easter resurrection without the cross. Jesus had to die on the cross to overcome the sin of the world, before he could “die”, he had to die and be buried before he could be resurrected. I/you must go to the cross, die at the cross, give up our sins at the cross before we can receive the gift of life available in the resurrection. Imagine you are James and John, standing at the foot of three crosses, Jesus in the middle, two thieves on his right and left. Do you think the words of the conversation we read this morning became overwhelming to them? From Thursday through today we experience the darkness of the world, but tomorrow is EASTER, the LIGHT overcomes darkness, LIFE overcomes death, the GOD’S LOVE overcomes sin. God wins!

Scripture Read Jeremiah 6 – 16 (6 -11 were last Friday’s reading)

Nugget Jeremiah 15:19-21 …. 16:16-18, 21

“Therefore thus says the LORD: If you turn back, I will take you back, and you shall stand before me. If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless, you shall serve as my mouth. It is they who will turn to you, not you who will turn to them. And I will make you to this people a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you, but they shall not prevail over you, for I am with you to save you and delver you, says the LORD. I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless. … I am now sending for many fishermen, says the LORD, and they shall catch them; and afterward I will send many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain and every hill, and out of the clefts of the rocks. For my eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from my presence, nor is their iniquity concealed from my sight. And I will doubly repay their iniquity and their sin, because they have polluted my land with the carcasses of their detestable idols, and have filled my inheritance with their abominations. … ‘Therefore I am surely going to teach them, this time I am going to teach them my power and my might, and the shall know that my name is the LORD.’”

Devotional Thought: What a body of scripture to read on Good Friday!? Jeremiah, a prophet sent by God to call the people to repentance, finds himself in two struggles. One with the people who refuse to listen, to their peril and the other with God who seemingly allows sinful disobedient people to live lives of abundance and plenty, while the remnant of faithful followers suffers. How meaningful to this pastor of two congregations, being at the end of another season of Lent, on Good Friday, the day the world went dark because of our sin, just days before Easter and the Resurrection, the day the lights came back on because of God’s love! Yes God will receive me/you when we turn back to Him! He sends fishermen to fish us our of our deep, deep holes and hunters to find us in our places of hiding, where we worship idols – gods with no power. Yet, if we will, when we turn back, God will take us back. That is when we learn the enormity of his power and might – when his grace and mercy overcome our sin. It is Good Friday, the day Jesus was crucified because of my/your sin; don’t get stuck in the darkness of this historical event. Turn back to God fully, Easter is coming, the Light of the world overcomes all darkness. Give thanks and praise to the one and only glorious God who made it happen then and makes it happen now! Thus says the LORD, “If you turn back, I will take you back, for I am with you to save you and deliver you.” Amen and Amen, give all glory and honor to God!

Scripture Read Job 29-30

Nugget Job 30:26-28

“But when I looked for good, evil came; and when I waited for light, darkness came. My inward parts are in turmoil, and are never still; days of affliction come to meet me. I go about in sunless gloom; I stand in the assembly and cry for help.”

Devotional Thought: Jobs words resonate with me this morning. I’m confident when he spoke or thought them these statements resonated with Moses as well. I am tired, frustrated and beaten down by those who bully others, who have no vision for the future, who only complain as they look back into the past. The glory of God, the light of God leads us forward into the future. “The LORD went in front of them in a pillar of cloud by day, to lead them along the way, and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light, so that they might travel by day or by night. Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.” (Exodus 13:21-22) Later, the pillar of the cloud went to the rear of the formation to protect the Israelites while the pillar of fire lit up the darkness allowing the Israelites to separate themselves from the pursuing enemy. I will trust God to show me the way, I will go where God leads, I will trust God to protect me from darkness, evil and those who have nothing to do with God. I will cry out to God for help for He will answer me. Hopefully, those assembled around me will hear who I cry to, will follow the example and will look to God to lead them into the future. O that the bully voices be transformed, that scaled fall from blind eyes, hardened hearts be changed. That all recognize the restoration and redemption available by Christ’s Resurrection! O Pillar of God who leads – I will follow You!

Nugget 1 Samuel 24:17

“He said to David, ‘You are more righteous than I; for you have repaid me good, whereas I have repaid you evil.’”

Devotional Thought: Saul speaks these words to David after David foregoes an opportunity to subdue/kill Saul. How many of us can also speak these same words to God because of Jesus’ sacrifice that washes away our sin? What is the evil in my/your life that causes nails to be driven into the flesh of our Lord? Thanks be to God for repaying evil with righteous sacrifice, the greatest good ever!

Nugget Exodus 6:6-9

“Say therefore to the Israelites, ‘I am the LORD, and I will free you from the burdens of the Egyptians and deliver you from slavery to them. I will redeem you with and outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. I will take you as my people, and I will be your God. You shall know that I am the LORD your God, who has free you from the burdens of the Egyptians. I will bring you into the land that I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; I will give it to you for a possession. I am the LORD.’ Moses told this to the Israelites; but they would not listen to Moses because of their broken spirit and their cruel slavery.”

Devotional Thought: Hear what God is saying! I am the LORD, I will free you, deliver you, redeem you, take you; I will be your God. You shall know the I am the LORD your God who has freed you, brought you out of slavery, given you a place to live free. Are you ready to not only remember and celebrate the resurrection of Jesus but to live into the freedom promised by Christ’s resurrection? Listen to God, be healed of your brokenness and freed from you bondage.
