“The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths, but they do not speak; they have eyes, but they do not see; they have ears, but they do not hear, and there is no breath in their mouths. Those who make them and all who trust them shall become like them.” Psalm 135:15-18

Pay attention! Idol worship is a killer. Oh how beautiful are the self-made images we turn to instead of God. Yes, we can make with our hands, or in our minds, some very attractive images – so attractive we fall in love with them to the point of bowing down to them. But they are images, with no life – what’s the point? Isaiah reminds us of the futile nature of worshipping self-made images. He tells the story of a wood carver who selects a log and cuts it into thirds. The first he sits on, the other he chops into pieces for firewood to heat the stove and the last he carves an image to worship. A god with a mouth, eyes, and ears that cannot speak, see, hear or breathe isn’t much of a god and certainly is not God! Pay attention! Idol worship is a killer. No breath = no life, no life = death. “Your name, O LORD, endures forever, your renown, O LORD, throughout the ages. … O give thanks to the God of heaven for his steadfast love endures forever.” (Psalm 135:13, 136:26)
