Scripture Read Isaiah 40-44

Nugget Isaiah 44:9-20

“All who make idols are nothing, and the things they delight in do not profit; their witnesses nether see nor know. And so they will be put to shame. Who would fashion a god or cast an image that can do no good? Look, all its devotees shall be put to shame; the artisans too are merely human. Let them all assemble, let them stand up; they shall be terrified, they shall all be put to shame. The ironsmith fashions it and works it over the coals, shaping it with hammers, and forging it with his strong arm; he becomes hungry and his strength fails, he drinks no water and is faint. The carpenter stretches a line, marks it out with a stylus, fashions it with planes, and marks it with a compass; he makes it in human form, with human beauty, to be set up in a shrine. He cuts down cedars or chooses a holm tree or an oak and lets it grow strong among the trees of the forest. He plants a cedar and the rain nourishes it. Then it can be used as fuel. Part of it he takes and warms himself; he kindles a fire and bakes bread. Then he makes a god and worships it, makes it a carved image and bows down before it. Half of it he burns in the fire; over this half he roasts meat, eats it and is satisfied. He also warms himself and says, ‘Ah, I am warm, I can feel the fire!’ The rest of it he makes into a god, his idol, bows down to it and worships it; he prays to it and says, ‘Save me, for you are my god!’ They do not know, nor do they comprehend; for their eyes are shut, so that they cannot see, and their minds as well, so that they cannot understand. No one considers, nor is there knowledge or discernment to say, ‘Half of it I burned in the fire; I also baked bread on its coals, I roasted meat and have eaten. Now shall I make the rest of it an abomination? Shall I fall down before a block of wood?’ He feeds on ashes; a deluded mind has led him astray, and he cannot save himself or say, ‘Is not this thing in my right hand a fraud?’”

Devotional thought: O the futility and absurdity of creating idols! The whole practice is overcome by asking one question after reading this passage. “What it the artisan had flipped the log over? The half that was first used to create an idol is now the half that was burned to cook on and get warm by. How is there any power in that lump of wood? How is there any power in any idol we create for ourselves? There is only on God, the Creator, Redeemer, Savior – worship God, not something I/you/we create for ourselves from a part of the Creation. Lent begins next week; let’s identify now the idols I/you/we have created that separate us from and distract our worship of God.

Scripture Read Job 15-16

Nugget Job 16:19

“Even now, in fact, my witness is in heaven, and he that vouches for me is on high.”

Devotional thought: God’s prevenient grace is wonderful! Prevenient grace, the grace of God that goes before us and leads us to Jesus. Here, with Job, long before Jesus, the Son of God, lives on earth, the Holy Spirit gives Job insight into the work of Jesus. He believes he has a witness in heaven who vouches for him. Deep down inside his soul, Job anointed by God’s Holy Spirit (Prevenient Grace) discerns the presence and salvific work of the Son, even though he (Job) is overwhelmed/terrified by God. O how wonderful is the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. May I/we, who live on this side of the Resurrection always remember we have a witness in heaven who not only vouches for us but has paid the debt for all my/our sin. Praise God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit!

Scripture Read Psalms 21-23

Nugget Psalm 22:19-24

“But you, O LORD, do not be far away! O my help, come quickly to my aid! Deliver my soul from the sword, my life from the power of the dog! Save me from the mouth of the lion! From the horns of the wild oxen you have rescued me. I will tell of your name to my brothers and sisters, in the midst of the congregation I will praise you; You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him; stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel! For he did not despise or abhor the affliction of the afflicted; he did not hide his face from me, but heard when I cried to him.”

Devotional thought: Praise God for all God does; the promises God keeps! God hears our cry, then comes and helps, delivers, saves, and rescues. Be the like the psalmist who cries out to God in time of need and be like the psalmist who worships God with praise and thanksgiving when cries (prayers) are answered. Ash Wednesday is a week away; the beginning of Lent. From what circumstance do I/you need help to overcome? Not that we need to wait a week to cry out, but what is it, who is it, that come Sunday morning you want to be completely free from, rescued, saved and delivered? Cry out to God, God is listening, will hear and respond! Praise be to God!

Scripture Read Judges 12-16

Nugget 14:1-3

“Once Samson went down to Timnah, and at Timnah he saw a Philistine woman. Then he came up, and told his father and mother, ‘I saw a Philistine woman at Timnah; now get her for me as my wife.’ But his father and mother said to him, ‘Is there not a woman among your kin, or among all our people, that you must go to take a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?’ But Samson said to his father, ‘Get her for me, because she pleases me.’

Devotional thought: Samson has been, is and remains under a Nazirite vow from before conception, for he is to be a leader of the Israelites. (Judges 13:3-5) The origin of this vow is found in Numbers 6:1-8. Yet Samson is human and is not only subject to but give into temptation. When his parents attempt to guide and correct his proposed course, Samson replies, “Get her for me, because she pleases me”, (“she is right in my eyes”). Oh the tantrums we throw in an attempt to get what we want, regardless of what we are supposed to have, regardless of God’s will for our lives. Temptation starts with something small, then each time we give in, it grows into something bigger and we find ourselves further and further from God. King David stayed home one spring instead of going out to campaign with his army, the place where a king is supposed to be. That little act then led to adultery, deception, murder ….. O God forgive me, when I say/think “Get ____ for me, because _______ pleases me. Let what pleases me be your will for my life.

Scripture Read Genesis 28-31

Nugget Genesis 28:18-22

“So Jacob rose early in the morning, and he took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it. He called that place Bethel; but the name of the city was Luz at the first. Then Jacob made a vow, saying, ‘If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, so that I come again to my father’s house in peace, then the LORD shall be my God, and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God’s house; and of all that you give me I will surely give you one-tenth to you.’”

Devotional thought: Upon waking from a dream in which God stood next to Jacob and said to him, “I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; ………. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done that I have promised you.” (read entire statement at Genesis 28:13-15) Jacob immediately builds an altar, declares this is none other than the house of God then says, “If God will…..”. How many times have I/you/we said or thought, “If God will keep His promises, then He will be my God and I will……” When are we going to get it into our hearts and heads that God is God, that God has kept, is keeping and will keep His promises yesterday, today and tomorrow?  When will we submit ourselves to live with God regardless the journey He sends us on, assured that God is who He says He is. If – then is a cautious way to live. Better to believe and live a life of faith saying, “God is, I will.” Build altars of worship that mean something, that demonstrate assured faith, say “God you are, I will.”

Scripture Read Romans 13-14

Nugget “Owe no one anything, except to love on another; for the one who loves has fulfilled the law. The commandments, ‘You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet’; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law.”

Devotional thought: “Love does no wrong to a neighbor,” who is my neighbor? Leviticus 19 uses several words to describe those I should care for (do no wrong to) the poor, the alien, neighbor, laborer, the deaf, the blind, the poor, the great (fellow citizen). “Love does no wrong to a neighbor.” “When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest. You shall not strip your vineyard bare, or gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the alien, I am the LORD your God. You shall not steal” (Leviticus 19:9-11a) Quail hunters know what damage has been done by reaping to the edges of the fields. There is no longer any cover or food for the quail – the result, the wild quail population is virtually wiped out. “Love does no wrong to a neighbor,” O Lord forgive me……

Scripture Read Matthew 17-20

Nugget Matthew 18:15, 21-22

“‘If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one.’ … Then Peter came and said to him, ‘Lord, if another member of the church sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times?’ Jesus said to him, ‘Not seven times but, I tell you, seventy-seven times.’”

Devotional thought: Holding others (holding self) accountable is vitally important to ongoing life in the church. Obedience to standards set by God for community in the church is needed for agreement. Each one cannot write their own rules, for we would certainly never come to consensus. When we allow another, when others allow me to sin, to break the rules, to be less than obedient, to not do what is best for the greater good then we have created a new standard. Calling another out, in love, early, keeps things from getting out of control. Not confronting them often leads to more and more disobedience, until there is chaos and confusion. Jesus goes on to tell us how to resolve conflict in verses 16 and 17 and the consequences in 18 and 19. Regardless how far the process goes and how many are needed to make the process work the absolute key required is forgiveness. I/you/we must be willing to forgive and forgive and forgive; Jesus says, “seventy-seven times”. Seven being the number of perfection, this means we are to forgive 10 x perfection plus seven more perfections – that’s a lot of forgiveness! How more accepting will someone be when held accountable (called out) when they are also forgiven (called up)? Oh Lord forgive my un-forgiveness, forgive my hesitancy to hold myself and others accountable to higher standards set by you, and those we covenant to keep as members of the church.

Scripture Read Isaiah 34-39

Nugget Isaiah 38:16-20

“O Lord, by these things people live, and in all these is the life of my spirit. Oh, restore me to health and make me live! Surely it was for my welfare that I had great bitterness; but you have held back my life from the pit of destruction, for you have cast all my sins behind your back. For Sheol cannot thank you, death cannot praise you; those who go down to the Pit cannot hope for your faithfulness. The living, the living, they thank you, as I do this day; fathers make known to children your faithfulness. The LORD will save me, and we will sing to stringed instruments all the days of our lives, at the house of the LORD.

Devotional thought: Where do I/you/we seek restoration? From whom do ask? We all we go through times of struggle, whether illness, or a crisis of faith, or a downturn in business, or a b=fractured/broken relationship. All of these are life-sucking events; they kill us a little bit. But the Lord can and will save us. There is life with God and it is the living that praise God with thanksgiving. By our praise and thanksgiving in worship others know if we are alive with God. Love God, love others, be holy for the Lord your God is holy! Worship Him with praise and Thanksgiving!

Scripture Read Job 13-14

Nugget Job 14:7-12

“‘For there is hope for a tree, if it is cut down, that it will sprout again, and that its shoots will not cease. Though its root grows old in the earth, and its stump des in the ground, yet at the scent of water it will bud and put forth branches like a young plant. But mortals die, and are laid low; humans expire, and where are they? As waters fail from a lake, and a river wastes away and dries up, so mortals lie down and do not rise again; until the heavens are no more, they will not awake or be roused out of their sleep.’”

Devotional thought: How marvelous to know Jesus Christ resurrected and the promise of resurrection that comes through His resurrection! Who among your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers does not possess the assurance that comes with knowing Christ, Christ crucified, dead, buried and gloriously resurrected to the right hand of the Father? Those are your mission field, your evangelistic target, go tell the story of Jesus Christ in your life; Go be a disciple and make disciples.

Scripture Read Psalms 18-20

Nugget Psalm 18:25-26

“With the loyal you show yourself loyal; with the blameless you show yourself blameless; with the pure your show yourself pure; and with the crooked you show yourself perverse.”

Devotional thought: God treats me/you/us as we treat others. That ought to make me/you/us pause and be still. How do we experience God? If not positively, it may just be we aren’t treating others very well. Love God, love others is not an either or but a both and.
