Scripture Nugget 7.22.2016

“Wisdom has built her house, she has hewn her seven pillars. She has slaughtered her animals, she has mixed her wine, she has also set her table. She has sent out her servant-girls, she calls from the highest places in the town, ‘You that are simple turn in here!’ To those without sense she says, ‘Come eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. Lay aside immaturity and live, and walk in the way of insight.’ … The foolish woman is loud; she is ignorant and knows nothing. She sits at the door of her house, on a seat at the high places of the town, calling to those who pass by, who are going straight on their way, ‘You who are simple, turn in here!’ And to those without sense she says, ‘Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.” But they do not know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.” Proverbs 9:1-6, 13-18

I am thankful today for a friend (Carolyn Moore) who preached yesterday at Pastor’s School. She reminded that gathering of UM pastors from across the state, that the gift of Wesleyan Theology (the theology of the United Methodist Church) is our understandings of grace that doesn’t with justification but continues with Sanctification, “Going on to perfection” in Christ. With her reminder fresh in my mind and heart reading Proverbs becomes much less works based, much less legal and more focused on the choices we are free to make. God gives us freedom to make choices, to choose God or _. God continues to give us that choice and to change the choice as we live out life on earth. God loves us and desires we choose Him, God continues to love us even when we choose __. God calls to us, read again how wisdom calls to us; but then so does sin, read again the foolish woman’s call. Both call to the simple and those without sense. One gives of herself and provides bread and wine of life in the light at the highest place, the other offers what isn’t hers, stolen goods offered in secret, behind closed doors in the darkness, in a high place (a substitute for the highest place). I/we are given the ability to choose and given options by God, who loves enough and trust us enough to make right choices. Dr Bob Tuttle, says, “if we didn’t have the choice to say no our Yes would be meaningless.” Oh, God I choose to go on to perfection in Christ, to grow in Christlikeness, to help others do the same. Help me to remember it is my choice, it is their choice. I can only choose for myself, I cannot make the choice for others, only lay out the options and love them as they live out their choices. Help me to remember grace. Help me to remember truth. Grace and truth as found in these words, “I (wisdom) love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently fine me. … For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the LORD; but those who miss me injure themselves; all who ate me love death.” Proverbs 8:17 & 35-36

Scripture Nugget 7.21.2016

“Oh, how I hated discipline, and my heart despised reproof! I did not listen to the voice of my teachers or incline my ear to my instructors. Now I am at the point of utter ruin in the public assembly.” Proverbs 5:12b-14

Parents, siblings and friends call us out to raise us up. When I/we fail to be held accountable for our sins, when we don’t repent and turn from those sins, ultimately we will be found out on a larger scale. We will be held accountable in public and more to the point we will be held accountable by God. Pay attention when a parent, loved one or friend points out indiscretion. Turn from those actions, confess to God, repent and believe in Jesus Christ!

Scripture Nuget 7.20.2016

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. … My child, if sinners entice you, do not consent. … My child do not walk, keep your foot from their paths; Proverbs 1:7,10, 15

To whom and where do I seek guidance, counsel and teaching? We must be on guard for there are those who would lead us away from God and into sin. Check out Adam and Eve’s story in Genesis 3. Deception continues to occur, in and out of the church. “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge.” Fear – respect/love of God is a great starting point!

Scripture Nugget 7.19.2016

The LORD is faithful in all his words, and gracious in all his deeds. The LORD upholds all who are falling, and raises up all who are bowed down. The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food in due season. You open your hand, satisfying the desire of every living thing. The LORD is just in all his ways, and kind in all his doings. The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desire of all who fear him; he also hears their cry, and saves them. The LORD watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy. My mouth will speak the praise of the LORD, and all flesh will bless his holy name forever. … Let everything that breathes praise the LORD! Praise the LORD!” Psalm, 145:13b-21, 150:6

Praise God who sits and waits, who watches and waits and who listens and waits. He waits on His creation to turn to Him, to return to Him. God is near to all who call on him, praise the Lord! Pay Attention! God is near to all who call on him in truth. Whose truth? Truth as defined by God. Lord forgive my less than honest examination of myself – it is by Your Truth I must compare myself to, not my desires. O God I call, draw near!

Scripture Nugget 7.18.2016

“O that you would kill the wicked, O God, and that the bloodthirsty would depart from me – those who speak of you maliciously, and lift themselves up against you for evil! Do I not hate those who hate you, O LORD? And do I not loathe those who rise up against you? I hate them with perfect hatred; I count them my enemies. Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139: 19-24

In 2 Corinthians 13:5, Paul says, “Examine yourselves to see whether you are living in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is in you? – unless, indeed, you fail to meet the test! Be certain God does and will search my (our) heart(s) and mind(s). God knows, He has searched out and sorted through each though and action. In these days, this past few weeks when the news is full of violence, shootings and demonstrations, groups taking sides, pointing fingers and angrily yelling at each other, God examines and searches our motives, He knows whether or not our hearts and minds are pure. While we Jesus followers are called to hold each other accountable we are also called to share Jesus, not only with each other – but with all, especially those who don’t know/are separated from Jesus. I pray there is no wickedness, no evil in me; I pray I honestly examine myself. That I may confess and ask forgiveness before God judges for the last time, but more to the point that I be Christlike.

Scripture Nugget 7.17.2016

“The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths, but they do not speak; they have eyes, but they do not see; they have ears, but they do not hear, and there is no breath in their mouths. Those who make them and all who trust them shall become like them.” Psalm 135:15-18

Pay attention! Idol worship is a killer. Oh how beautiful are the self-made images we turn to instead of God. Yes, we can make with our hands, or in our minds, some very attractive images – so attractive we fall in love with them to the point of bowing down to them. But they are images, with no life – what’s the point? Isaiah reminds us of the futile nature of worshipping self-made images. He tells the story of a wood carver who selects a log and cuts it into thirds. The first he sits on, the other he chops into pieces for firewood to heat the stove and the last he carves an image to worship. A god with a mouth, eyes, and ears that cannot speak, see, hear or breathe isn’t much of a god and certainly is not God! Pay attention! Idol worship is a killer. No breath = no life, no life = death. “Your name, O LORD, endures forever, your renown, O LORD, throughout the ages. … O give thanks to the God of heaven for his steadfast love endures forever.” (Psalm 135:13, 136:26)

Scripture Nugget 7.16.2016

“Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD. Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications! If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered. I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning. O Israel, hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with him is great power to redeem. It is he who will redeem Israel from all its iniquities. Psalm 130: 1-8

Do you ever wrestle with memories of iniquities long since confessed, long since forgiven? O how satan and our fallen selves attempt to pile on the guilt. In these times who do I/you look to, listen for, cry out to? Where do I/you turn? The Word is a wonderful place to find the one we seek! The Word is a wonderful place to wait and to rest in, to eat and to drink, while we watch for the coming of the Lord. Re-read this Psalm, by editing verses 7 and 8, this way:

O (your name), hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love (mercy), and with him is great power to redeem. It is he who redeems me/you from all iniquities.

O (your church), hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love (mercy), and with him is great power to redeem. It is he who redeems us from all iniquities.

O (your country), hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love (mercy), and with him is great power to redeem. It is he who redeems us from all iniquities.

Find peace in God’s redeeming grace! God’s Over-the-Horizon Promise is real! Live out God’s promise by practicing Over-the-Horizon Faith. Forgiveness, Restoration, Redemption are not just possibilities but are real! God is merciful, God is forgiving. Life with God is about choices, Life without God is the consequence for choices made which separate me/you from Him.

O (your name), hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love (mercy), and with him is great power to redeem. It is he who redeems me/you from all iniquities.

Scripture Nugget 7.15.2016

“Happy are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD. Happy are those who keep his decrees, who seek him with their whole heart, who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways. You have commanded your precepts to be kept diligently. O that my ways be steadfast in keeping your statutes! … Let your steadfast love come to me, O LORD, your salvation according to your promise. … Hot indignation seizes me because of the wicked, those who forsake your law. … In your steadfast love spare my life, so that I may keep the decrees of your mouth. … I Hold back my feet from every evil way, in order to keep your word. … Turn to me and be gracious to me, as is your custom toward those who love your name. … Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble. I hope for your salvation, O LORD, and I fulfill your commandments. My soul keeps your decrees; I love them exceedingly. I keep your precepts and decrees, for all my ways are before you.… I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek out your servant, for I do not forget your commandments.” Psalm 119: 1-5, 41, 53, 88, 101, 132, 165-168, 176

I love this Psalm, it is brimming over with God’s promises of love, grace and salvation! Here also, the Psalmist (who represents me and you, all of us as individuals) declares his love of God’s Word, of the Law and tells how he will obey, follow and walk within God’s boundaries. But here also, the Psalmist cries out because of the struggle. After all the words expressing love of and for God’s law, and declaring obedience the Psalmist ends crying out – “I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek out your servant, for I do not forget your commandments.” A cry to the shepherd from a lost sheep, who recognizes he/she is separated from the shepherd. How many times, have I, lost my way, turned away and found myself distant from The Shepherd? Praise God for Jesus who comes to save the lost, who leaves the 99 to look for the 1. Grace and mercy abound – “Happy are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD.”

Scripture Nugget 7.8.2016

"Restore us, O LORD God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved. You brought a vine out of Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it. You cleared the ground for it; it took deep root and filled the land. The mountains were covered with its shade, the mighty cedars with its branches; it sent out its branches to the sea, and its shoots to the River. Why then have you broken down its walls, so that all who pass along the way pluck its fruit? The boar from the forest ravages it, and all that move in the filed feed on it. Turn again, O God of hosts; look down from heaven, and see; have regard for this vine, the stock that your right hand planted. The have burned it with fire, they have cut it down; may they perish at the rebuke of your countenance. But let your hand be upon the one at your right hand, the one whom you made strong for yourself. Then we will never turn back from you; give us life, and we will call on your name. Restore us, O LORD God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved." Psalm 80:7-19

Restoration – exactly what is it I/you/we want to be restored to? God desires we be restored to the condition He created us in; not some earlier version of our brokenness. God sets the conditions for life with Him, do I accept or do I attempt to set the conditions as I desire them to be. God created, God sent Jesus to restore – O that I/you/we never turn back from God; that God give me/you/us life, and that I/you/we call His name not rely on others to save me/you/us. Events this week reinforce that restoration of God’s image comes only through God’s saving grace!

Scripture Nugget 7.6.2016

“Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck. I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and the flood sweeps over me. I am weary with my crying; my throat is parched. My eyes grow dim with waiting for my God. … Let all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you. Let those who love your salvation say evermore, ‘God is great!’ But I am poor and needy; hasten to me, O God! You are my help and my deliverer; O LORD, do not delay!” Psalm 69: 1-3, 70:4-5

O God I need a broad place to stand, a place of assurance, a place where I am not in fear of drowning while quenching my thirst. How miserable it must be to be up to one’s neck in water, so deep the water washes completely over you, yet your throat is parched because you are afraid to drink deeply. O God lift me, lift us out of the deep! You are our help and deliverer. From where does help come from? Help comes from the Lord, God Almighty!
