Scripture Nugget 1.9.2016

“So he went in to his father, and said, ‘My father’; and he said, ‘Here I am; who are you, my son?’ Jacob said to his father, ‘I am Esau your firstborn. I have done as you told me; now sit up and eat my game, so that you may bless me.’ But Isaac said to his son, ‘How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?’ He answered, ‘Because the LORD your God granted me success.’ Genesis 27:18-20

Oh my, how quickly does one act of manipulation and deception lead into depth of sin(s) never intended? (Go back to the garden or fast-forward to David) O that I never give God credit for anything He hasn’t really granted, that I not employ a suggestion or hint of God’s omnipotence in an attempt to manipulate others or cause a situation to turn in my favor. That I would follow God’s lead, not take matters into my own hand in an effort to “help” God. That I would follow God’s lead, and bring others into God’s will not my own.

Scripture Nugget 1.8.2016

“After these things God tested Abraham. He said to him, ‘Abraham!’ And he said, ‘Here I am.’ He said, ‘Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I shall show you.’ So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac; he cut the wood for the burnt offering, and set out and went to the place in the distance that God has shown him. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place far away. Then Abraham said to his young men, ‘Stay here with the donkey; the boy and I will go over there; we will worship, and then we will come back to you.’ Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. So the two of them walked on together. Isaac said to his father Abraham, ‘Father!’ And he said, ‘Here I am, my son.’ He said, ‘The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?’ Abraham said, ‘God himself will provide the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.’ So the two of them walked on together. When they came to the place that God had shown him, Abraham built an altar there and laid the wood in order. He bound his son Isaac, and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to kill his son. But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven, and said, ‘Abraham, Abraham!’ And he said, ‘Here I am.’ He said, ‘Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.’ And Abraham looked up and saw a ram, caught in a thicket by its horns. Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place ‘The LORD will provide’; as it is said to this day, ‘On the mount of the LORD is shall be provided.’” Genesis 22:1-14

Now read this passage again, slowly, very slowly. Imagine you are Abraham, the rest of story has not been lived out, the scriptures have not been written, and you are living out the story without the benefit of “the rest of the story.”

Do I, reading the phrase, “After these things”, begin to remind God of all I have been through when He decides to test me? Do my “things” even compare to the life events of Abraham? Do I complain I’ve been tested enough, returning to the task of reminding God of all I’ve endured, as is God doesn’t know? Do I remind God of all Abraham endured and protest the testing? Or am I willing to continue to follow God by stages in faith? “On the foundation of practical faith is built the kingdom of heaven, which the Lord swears shall include all nations of the patriarch – (1) acceptance of the word of God, (2) self-sacrifice, (3) faith instead of sight, (4) withholding nothing, and (5) perseverance to the end.” (The Pulpit Commentary) O that I will from this point on, live in faith that the promise has been, is and will continue to be fulfilled.

Scripture Nuggets 1.6-7.2016

1.6.2016 (Genesis 16-18) “When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said to him, ‘I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless. And I will make my covenant between me and you, and will make you exceedingly numerous. Then Abram fell on his face; … Genesis 17:1-3a

Oh that I would know when to stand before God and when to fall flat in worship and reverence. Not get caught up in God’s work in me but that God is addressing me – God, creator of all, giver of grace, the one who saves, heals, restores; that I would always recognize His presence and fall at His feet.

1.7.2016 (Genesis 19-21)
“He answered, ‘For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.’ Genesis 18:32b

Responding to Abraham’s defense of and cry for mercy for citizens of the city of Sodom, God says he will not destroy the city if 10 righteous people are found in the city. The angels, sent to Sodom, find only 4, Lot, his wife, and 2 daughters. Can God always find me among the righteous? Can I always be depended on to be one of those who protects others from destruction, even those who do not protect themselves? Lord, let it always be so.

Scripture Nugget 1.5.2016

“As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a deep and terrifying darkness descended upon him. The LORD said to Abram, ‘Know this for certain, that your offspring shall be aliens in a land that is not theirs, and shall be slaves there, and they shall be oppressed for four hundred years; but I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions. As for yourself, you shall go to your ancestors in peace, you shall be buried in a good old age. And they shall come back here in the fourth generation; for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.’ When the sun had gone down and it was dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, ‘To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.’” Genesis 15:12-21

Do I focus on, live into and pass on the promises of God? Or do I get stuck in or fix my eyes and thoughts on the darkness? Do I hear God as He speaks to me or am I terrified by the conditions around me? That deep sleep and terrifying darkness might just be God getting me to a place of stillness, to see if I’ll rest in Him, will I really listen to, respond to and live out the long term promises He has made. As a descendant of Abraham, through faith will I realize the fullness and potential of the relationship God offers through grace? Or will I settle for and be satisfied with only a portion of the promise? Why oh why would I limit myself from that which God desires for me, my family, friends and offspring generations to come?

Scripture Nugget 1.4.2016

“Now the LORD said to Abram, ‘Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.’ So Abram went, as the LORD had told him, and Lot went with him.” Genesis 12:1-4a Abram leaves all he is familiar with, all that he depends on, his foundation for life; homeland, family and home to go someone where he hasn’t been to and can’t even see. Wesley says this tests Abram – “whether he could trust God farther than he saw him”. I call this “Over the Horizon Faith.” How much will I give up, who and what will I leave behind to answer God when He calls? Do I trust? Will I risk? Am I obedient?

Scripture Nuggeet 1.3.2016

“So Noah went out with his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives. And every animal, every creeping thing, and every bird, everything that moves on the earth, went out of the ark by families. Then Noah built an altar to the LORD, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And when the LORD smelled the pleasing odor, the LORD said in his heart, ‘I will never again curse the ground because of humankind, for the inclination of the human heart is evil from youth; nor will I ever again destroy every living creature as I have done. As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.’ God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. … I give you everything. Only, you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. For your own lifeblood I will surely require a reckoning: from every animal I will require it and from human beings, each one for the blood of another, I will require a reckoning for human life. Whoever sheds the blood of a human, by a human shall that person’s blood be shed; for in his own image God made humankind. And you, be fruitful and multiply, abound on the earth and multiply in it.’” Genesis 8:18-9:1, 9:3b-7 After a time of destruction, devastation and loss Noah’s first act is to worship God and offer sacrifice to God. He offered some of the very best God had provided. Oh that I would do the same, that we God’s people would do the same in similar circumstances.

Scripture Nugget 1.2.2016

“The LORD said to Cain, ‘Why are you angry, and why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is lurking at the door; its desire is for you, but you must master it.’” Genesis 4:6-7

“When God created humankind, he made them in the likeness of God. Male and female he created them, and he blessed them and named them ‘Humankind’ when they were created.” Genesis 5:1b-2

“The LORD saw the wickedness of humankind was great in the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of their hearts was only evil continually. And the LORD was sorry that he had made humankind on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. So the LORD said, ‘I will blot out from the earth the human beings I have created – people together with animals and creeping things and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.’ But Noah found favor in the sight of the LORD. … Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation; Noah walked with God.” Genesis 6:5-8, 9b-c.

Fast forward to Luke 1:5-6, “In the days of King Herod of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly order of Abijah. His wife was a descendant of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. Both of them were righteous before God, living blamelessly according to all the commandments and regulations of the Lord.

Righteous and blameless, living holy lives we are able to walk with God, by God’s grace and mercy. Thanks be to God for the remnant in each generation whom escapes the sin lurking at the door, focuses on God and sets the condition to usher in the Spirit of God. Today, desire to find and live out your original image and likeness, the image and likeness of God, only answer the door when Jesus knocks, not the when the evil desires of the heart surface.

Scripture Nugget 1.1.2016

In the beginning God – created x3, God made x3, God said x10, God saw x7, God called (named) x5, God blessed x3, God finished (for the week), God rested. Genesis 1:1-2:3

“God blessed them (every living creature that moves, of every kind, with which the wasters swarm, and every winged bird of every kind – Gen 1:21), saying ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.’” Genesis 1:22

“God blessed them (humankind –Gen 1:27), and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sir and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.’” Genesis 1:28

“So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that he had done in creation.” Genesis 2:3

In our keeping and tilling, being fruitful and multiplying, living life abundant let us remember to rest in God, to rest as God rest, to live in faith that enough is enough and that rest not only helps restore from the past but also builds up for the future.
