Scripture Read Exodus 1-4

Nugget Exodus 1:7,12

“But the Israelites were fruitful and prolific; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them. … But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread.”

Devotional Thought: As the Israelites were obedient to God’s original purpose for humankind, “be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it;” (Gen 1:28) and “to till it and keep it” (Gen 2:15) they flourished. Even in captivity, being persecuted and oppressed they grew in number. Why is it then that we Christians seem to dry up and die in places where we are not persecuted and oppressed? In Ezekiel 37:3 God asks, “can these bones live?” The answer ultimately is a resounding Yes! Yes, when we the people of God allow God to lead, allow God’s spirit to empower us and we move in and with that spirit. The Israelites lived in obedience and the multiplied and grew strong, may we follow their example.
