Scripture Read Matthew 14-16

Nugget Matthew 16:24-26

“Then Jesus told his disciples, ‘If any want to become followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life?’”

Devotional thought: A note in the margin of my Bible captured in 2016 says, “All who are drowning want to be saved, we will grab any rope, regardless of who throws it. But once on dry land we still must follow God – not necessarily the one who through the rope. There is a difference in rescue and salvation, Rescuer and Savior. God blesses all the Rescuers and the Rescued through the work of the Savior. Let us all be Rescuers; let’s be on the lookout for those who are drowning, prepared to cast out a line for others to grab hold of, but once we pull them back to shore or into the boat, let’s also introduce them to Jesus – the Savior. If we could save ourselves, generate our own salvation, we wouldn’t need a Savior. But we do and by God’s grace we have a Savior, who is Jesus Christ our Lord!
